Spalling concrete

Spalling Concrete Before

Exposed reinforcement showing rust.

Spalling or Concrete Cancer has the possibility to affect any building in which reinforced concrete was used in its construction: floor slabs, stairs, balconies, walls, columns, beams and pathways.

Evidenced by drummy concrete, exposed steel and/or specific cracking.

This compilation of photographs, demonstrate Dapcor completing spalling repairs on one of a number of the Bondi bridge walkways renewed.

Spalling Concrete After

Application of Sika Repair Mortar which is formulated
with corrosion inhibitors.

Spalling Concrete After

Final protective render is being applied.

The project involved organising road closures, pedestrian traffic redirection and liaising with council.

Spalling Concrete

Cracked and drummy concrete in photo of another project indicates spalling concrete occurring.

It’s important to repair spalling concrete to maintain the buildings integrity and prevent further deterioration as shown in the balcony images below showing extensive rust on the reinforcement.

Concrete Spalling

When concrete structures are beyond repair, then replacement is necessary.

Bulging kitchen floor caused by magnesite requiring treatment. The rust steel expands and causes the concrete to lift, making the floor uneven. Magnesite floor topping which was used in older buildings causes the accelerated deterioration and rusting of the slab reinforcement.
